Facebook services across Europe are being disrupted this morning, causing users of Facebook itself, Facebook Messenger, and its sister services Instagram and WhatsApp to throw up error messages when attempting to post. It’s also understood that mobile users are finding the app crashes when it encounters whatever is causing the problems. The outage seems to be affecting users in the United Kingdom and the bulk of mainland Europe, with reports as far west as Portugal and as far east as Romania. Incidents have also been reported in the Middle East, India, some parts of South East Asia, and Australia too.
Down Detector shows a massive spike in reports from around 0900UK/0400ET today, across all four services:
A report on the Facebook Workplace Service Status page has confirmed that the outage is affecting business customers too:
At the time of writing, there has been no other acknowledgment from Facebook that the problem exists on any of its social media pages and as such, we’ve got no information on the cause of expected duration. It should be noted that users can access the site, but attempting to post throws up a variety of error messages.
The fact that the footprint of reports from Down Detector is almost identical for all four services, suggests that this is some sort of data center issue, though we cannot confirm that at this time.
The outage comes just hours after 48 US States announced a class-action lawsuit to force the breakup of Facebook, including the disposal of Instagram and WhatsApp. The lawsuit alleges that Facebook identified Instagram and WhatsApp as threats to its monopoly power and acquired them instead of competing with them. In its public response, the company mentions that the transactions were intended to provide better products for the people who use them, and they unquestionably did do so.
We’ll keep an eye on this Facebook outage and update you when we have some further information.
